The Services segment of the construction industry has witnessed tremendous merger and acquisition activity over the
past several years. Specifically, specialty subcontractors went through a period of rapid consolidation in the
late 1990s. Industry giants such as Emcor Group Inc., Integrated Electrical Services, Inc., Encompass Service Corp.,
Quanta Services Inc., Comfort Systems USA Inc., and Tecta America Corp. were formed through consolidation strategies.
The results have been mixed with several of these consolidations suffering financially or bankrupt. Nonetheless,
M&A activity among specialty subcontractors remains one of the most active areas in the construction industry.
Both strategic and financial buyers continue to make acquisitions in this segment at a rapid pace.
