Equipment manufacturers represent many of the largest participants in the construction industry. Giants such as AB Volvo, Caterpillar, Inc., CNH Global, N.V., Deere & Company and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. continue to get bigger as they acquire smaller manufacturers. Equipment distribution companies are numerous and the segment remains highly fragmented. Rental companies, which were rapidly consolidating in the late 1990s with the financial backing of numerous private equity investors, have slowed their acquisition activities and are now focusing on integration.
