Merger and acquisition activity within the Natural Materials sub-sector has been consistently
active over the past ten years. Large international strategic acquirers, such as CEMEX, CRH,
Italcementi, Holcim, HeidelbergCement, and Lafarge, have dominated this activity as they
continue to vertically integrate their operations and solidify their reserve positions in the
US. This robust acquisition activity should persist for the foreseeable future as new acquirers
continue to emerge from Latin America, environmental concerns make permitting new quarries and
pits increasingly difficult and foreign currencies remain strong relative to the US dollar.
